The Sears Tower is as tall as 1,454 feet, and even taller (1707 ft.) when you include its twin antennas, which are each over two hundred feet tall. The Sears Tower is a massive 110 stories tall. The Sears Tower is located on Wacker Drive in Chicago, Illinois. This was a smart place to construct it, because many people in the area were in need of office space. When the Sears Tower was finished being built, it was filled with about twelve thousand workers. This massive tower was designed by the architecture firm of Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill. This tower was completed in 1973. After this building was done being constructed the world had a new tallest building. The Sears Tower has a steel frame which is surrounded in bronze tinted glass and stainless aluminum.   The foundation consists of a one- hundred foot deep hole, and is surrounded by two- hundred circular caissons around the foundation.

The Tribune Tower is on 435 N. Michigan Avenue, just north of      the Chicago River. The Tribune Tower was built from 1922-1925.  The architects of the Tribune Tower were  Raymond M. Hood and John Mead Howells. The Chicago Tribune newspaper held a contest in 1922 to design the Tribune Tower. They wanted the world's most beautiful office building. Raymond M. Hood and John Mead Howells were the winners of the contest. The Tribune Tower is important because the offices of the Chicago Tribune newspaper are located there.  There are over 120 stones in the Tribune Tower taken from other sites and structures. Some of them are from Bunker Hill, Mark Twain's "Injun Joe Cave", the Parthenon, and the Taj Mahal.

The Water Tower was built in 1869 and it is on North     Michigan Ave., but it looks like it's on Chicago Ave. W.W. Boyington, a great architect, designed the Water Tower. He also designed how it would pump water from Lake Michigan. The Water Tower is made out of limestone. The pipes are very secure, being some of the most secure pipes in the world. They are covered heavily with limestone, too. Before the Water Tower, Chicago's water was really bad. Chicago pumped its water from the Chicago River which was also the city's sewer. Then, W.W. Boyington designed how the Water Tower would pump cleaner water from Lake Michigan to the city. The Water Tower was important because Chicago's drinking water was very bad until it (and the Pumping Station across the street) was built to bring in water from Lake Michigan. Now, the Water Tower is important because it is one of a very few buildings in this part of Chicago to make it through the Chicago Fire, which makes it a historical landmark.

This skyscraper is located on North Michigan     Avenue, near   the Water Tower.  The John Hancock Center was designed by Bruce Graham, a well known architect who is part of the Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill architecture firm. This was one of his first and most popular buildings. Graham's influence for designing this skyscraper was to make it fit in with the surroundings of the site, because it was going to be built on North Michigan Avenue, a place where many shops and businesses were located. The John Hancock Center was completed in 1970. The first five stories are stores, six through twelve are for parking, 13 through 41 are offices, 44 through 92 are condos, and 93 through 100 are for television facilities, an observatory, a restaurant, and mechanical uses. The John Hancock Center is 344 meters tall, and has one hundred stories. The building is able to support these one hundred stories because it tapers from top to bottom.

Marina City is located at 300 North State Street, between State and Dearborn streets. It is a semi-circular building    that was built in 1959. Many people say the building resembles corncobs. The amount of money to construct this was $36,000,000.This is a modern style building and takes up only 3 acres. Marina City was designed by Bertrand Goldberg. He was born in 1913 and studied at Harvard, as well as Illinois Institute of Technology. He also worked with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Marina City has four hundred and fifty apartments in each of the towers. The apartments are in the top portion of the building. The parking portion of the building can accommodate 450 automobiles. Marina City provides many Chicagoans with a place to live and park their car. It also has restaurants, theaters, and a place to park boats. Marina City is a beautiful part of Chicago's skyline.

The Monadnock Building is located at 53 West Jackson     Boulevard, the same street as the Chicago Board of Trade. The north part of the Monadnock Building was designed by Burnham and Root, two very famous Chicago architects. The south half was designed  by Holabird and Roche, who are also famous Chicago architects. It took from 1889 until 1891 to  build the Monadnock. The north part was finished first, then the south half was built later. The Monadnock Building is important because the building is part load-bearing wall construction, and part modern skyscraper with a steel skeleton. It is the tallest masonry building in Chicago, perhaps the world. The base walls are six feet thick and they rise to the full 215 foot height of 16 floors. The style of architecture used in it is called Richardsonian, which is a style named for the architect H.H. Richardson, who designed the Marshall Field & Company store on State Street.
